What is a PI investigation report? Content, format, and delivery questions

Understand the report before contracting. A report does not automatically determine a court outcome.

Content to ask about

  • Investigation dates and locations
  • Method and staffing
  • Chronology of observed actions
  • Photo/video timestamps
  • Separation of observation and inference
  • Creation date and page numbers

Before contracting

  • Paper, PDF, and video delivery
  • A redacted sample report
  • Image and video resolution
  • Correction or explanation terms
  • Secure delivery
  • Agency retention and deletion timing

Explain your intended use

The useful format differs for a private conversation, internal review, or lawyer consultation. If legal proceedings are possible, consider asking a lawyer about needs before commissioning the investigation.
